As a design student, I was always told that it’s inevitable that along the way, more than once, I’m bound to hit a creative wall, and get into a rut. I didn’t think much of it since it hadn’t happened yet. (But isn’t that how we tend to view everything?)
As you can guess, this is exactly what happened to me recently. For our current project, we are doing a package design redo. It’s even more humorous that I was looking forward to this more than any other project this year. I threw down my ideas and was ready to go, doing digital comps like no ones business. Then comes a mid-project critique from my professor. The design isn’t working. All my stuff–while good–has the same style. It needs to be more masculine. It needs to be more Alaskan. As I kept trying harder and harder to make it work, I was just, as my prof put it so well, trying to cram a square peg in a round hole.
So, the realization set in. A horrible one for my personality with a low stress tolerance, controlled schedule, and lists everywhere. I had to start completely over. Throw it out, moving on. Let me tell you, there was almost a girl seizing in that room.
So, after an evening of stress, my encouraging, honest husband set my mind at piece. I read an article by Promise Tangeman which was exactly what I needed to hear. She also brought to my attention a verse that is so empowering to me, that I thought I’d share it at the end of my post.
And now, onto my new package design!
A little less than a year ago I photographed my cousins senior photos. I was so excited but at the same time a little bummed because I wish we could have had more time! But I love how some of them turned out and wanted to share them here! :) Courtney was beautiful and it shined through her smile and personality the whole time. I loved doing this with her!
Hope you enjoyed these! Feel free to comment hehe.
So I feel like just giving anyone who cares a little update on mah life at the moment. Because I feel like blogging and can’t think of anything else to blog about. But this should stay entertaining ;)
So school can be stupid. I’m done with basic classes. Not literally, per say, but my head is. It’s like never-ending, all these silly classes. But while I sit here and complain, I’ve learned a lot from all of them and feel like a smarter smarty-pants because of it. As far as my artsy classes, I always dig those. It’s fun discovering art while all the while I’m discovering the artist in myself. Also, as you can see in my previous post, I’ve applied to showcase my art at a popular cafe here in Anchorage of which I’m still waiting to hear back from–anxiously, I might add.
Aside from school, Nicholas keeps me…me…? I’d go crazy if he wasn’t here to de-stress me and make me laugh and feel beautiful everyday. I don’t get tired of being a wife, I love waking up to Nick’s teasing about me being completely pushing him off the bed and going to bed every night with cold toes that get warmed by a toasty back beside me :D (that’s always accompanied by a shrill squeal)–that is until the dishes pile up and everything in our closet is in the dirty clothes and yet I find myself mindlessly stumbling on the internet looking at cool houses and outfits on Pinterest. ha. Then I’m like, “Oh yeah, I should be doing that.” Whoops! ;) But hey, I’m getting better! At the moment our fridge isn’t working, so our milks (Yes, that’s plural) have been curdling in two days verses two weeks, but the handy maintenance man will be fixing that soon…or so he says… It’s fun stuff.
Bro. Ohhh Bro. He’s a handful. But SO hilarious and has such character. We have an awesome cat. He’s a keeper ;)
We’re slowly reading The Hunger Games and it’s pretty good so far! Can’t wait to see the movie. Also media-related, I just started watching New Girl with the cute Zooey Dechanel. It’s so funny! She’s great and I don’t know why she hasn’t made a TV show yet. Also Chelsea Lately is like…hilarious…Nick likes The Walking Dead and is trying to get me into it, and at first I was against that, but I saw one episode and although my pride tried to hold it back, it’s really not a bad show. hehe!
It’s November and you know what that means! Yes, No-Shave November! Haha, just kidding. It’s almost Thanksgiving! And you know what THAT means! Food! Nahhh…that too, but what I’m talking about is my parents and brudder and Nannie are coming to have Thanksgiving with us!!! I’m so excited I can’t wait!!! :) Only 16 more days!!! I can’t wait to show them around and stuff. It’s going to be so much fun.
What about the snow you ask? Oh yes, I almost forgot! Winky winky. It’s so beautiful!!! And terrible to drive in! But tis great. I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I can’t wait to go sledding and snowboarding. Twill be great fun!
Hmmm… I can’t think of much else at the moment…and this gal’s eyelids are getting heavy. Time to go crawl in my warm bed and sleep until the Mr. gets home from his night shift and then I shall sleep more soundly :) Nighty night!
In all things, love.
In T-80 minutes I’m going to an interview at a popular Cafe here in Anchorage (Snow City Cafe). No, not for a job, but to have my art displayed there for a month–with an opening reception and everything! This is a great opportunity to get my name and work out there, so I’m really hoping I get this! I’m nervous but pretty confident :) Wish me luck!
First off, I am addicted to Pintrest. WOW it’s amazing!
Second, here’s a few pics I just adore :)
Some drawing I was doing today…
And just some more random pictures I like :)
That’s all for now! :)
So I have an oober long DIY craft list of things I want to do. Since I don’t have to worry about wedding planning, moving, or school yet, and since I don’t have a way to get out of the house, I can finally actually DO the things on my list! (Amazing, I know!)
So I did this cute little braided headband. I love hair stuff, so this will be perfect and I can’t wait to make more with different colors. Here’s the tutorial link: http://mycakies.blogspot.com/2010/01/braided-headband-tutorial.html. I didn’t have a sewing machine, but I’m pretty confident in my hand-sewing skills, so I wasn’t too worried about that. It’s pretty easy and you can get creative with it! :)
Wow, I can’t believe it’s already the end of the semester! One more class and one final and I’m done. I’ve had such a great experience here at TCU. I’ve made some truly awesome friends and met some amazing people, my artistic eyes have really been opened and my professors have challenged me like none other, and all in all I’ve learned so much more than I could have ever expected. I’ve definitely grown and will take a lot from my year at TCU from here on out.
So, I’ve done quite a few projects this past semester and I’m sorry to inform you that I haven’t had much time to blog about it all although I wish I could have! (But hey, I’ve got a wedding to plan ;)) So I figured I’d share with you a few of my Final projects I just turned in/had critiques over…
First, in my Photography class we simply had to choose 12-15 of our best works and mount them all and just turn them into her in our portfolio. You can see the images online HERE. I’m so sad I have to give up the beloved camera I borrowed this semester! I use it all the time and am just gonna have to get me one sometime! haha…
In my 3D Design class our final had to do with Braising (It’s kind of like welding). We were told to construct a bridge of our choice that was 18″-24″ long. I did the Sydney Harbor Bridge and I am SO satisfied with how it turned out! I’ve never braised before but it was a really fun experience. I loved figuring things out as I went, finding the best methods and shortcuts, and especially getting to play with fire :D. On the other hand, we didn’t have a lot of time for this project and it was excruciatingly time consuming, especially since I had soooooo many little pieces and detailing. I used steel rods for the majority of it, solder for the vertical “cables”, basswood for the pillars, and balsa wood for the road, which broke and rebroke about 13 times…If you’ve ever worked with balsa wood I think you’ll agree when I say…I HATE it. lol
It was intense and pretty crazy, but I must say I’m proud ;)
And I’m so glad to be done with that! hahaha…
For my Illustration final, we had to recreate a children’s book wrap. If you know me, you can assume that I was ECSTATIC about this project in particular–and you’re so right! I did “Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon” (Click for a picture of the original book) and I loved the whole process. The watercolor is great and the Prismacolors did wonders!!! :)
This book was also very inspiring to me as a kid :)
And lastly, for my Vis Comm final we had to turn in our sketchbooks which we had been doing all year. Mine is actually in the professor’s possession at the moment, so when I get it back I will elaborate on it more in another post.
Like I said, TCU has been great, and I’m so ready for the adventure ahead. University of Alaska Anchorage, GET READY! ;)
Until next time,
In all things, love…
John Baldessari said it best when he said that words are communication, and images are communication, so why not put them together? So that’s what I did, and I love to do it on photoshop. It’s funny because I’m typically a cheesy person but I hate cliche quotes. I’m attracted to quotes that you’ve never heard before or that kind of grab your attention. I absolutely love typography and experimenting with it. Which is fitting, since I’ll be a graphic designer! So here’s a couple I’ve just been having fun with.
